My first graders are enthusiastic beginning readers and writers. They enjoy hearing stories and trying to write like our mentor authors. Most of the children speak a second language at home with their families. Portuguese and Spanish being the majority. As a result, support at home in reading and writing is limited. My goal in our writing is to present featured author's for our students to be inspired about in their writing. Our books in first grade are limited to one class set to be shared by 11 other teachers.
