My students face poverty, gang pressures, and personal challenges. Our school ranks in the lowest 3 deciles of the Academic Performance Index. Only a small group of my students have had Arts in elementary, two-thirds have not had any visual arts experiences. I have many English learners and special needs students. Over 300 students enter my class each year. A dwindling school budget and pressures to increase API scores means my students' art education takes a backseat.
