This year, I, along with a 7th grade teacher and 3 paraeducators opened an 6th/7th grade Autism Resource Services classroom in Maryland. We work with high-functioning autism students who attend public school. Currently, 9 students receive this service. My students want to be successful and strive to meet the demands in school. Unfortunately, some skills that are innate to others take explicit instruction and repetition before generalization can occur. My students need engaging resources that support instruction on social interactions and provide training on personal development. They learn best when lessons are interactive and include visuals and media. Lastly, we noticed a trend that anytime technology is used motivation and assessment scores go up.
