This is an exceptional story, based on true facts. I've previously checked it out at the library and read it to my students. They've begged me not to stop reading when our time has expired. They've made wonderful connections between current events and events that transpired in the story. I want each of my students to have the opportunity to read and reread critical passages from this novel and to be able to discuss and write about their ideas and feelings generated by this book. Additionally, this book is a great tool to teach vocabulary as well as concepts from the 5th grade Common Core in a more engaging way. I will also plan on doing hands on engagement activities in alignment with this novel including trying millet to allow my kids to relate and understand those characters in the novel. This historical fiction piece of literature will bring some important lessons to the classroom that will be beneficial and meaningful to the kids long term.
