My students come from a low socioeconomic background. Some come from foster homes, 1-parent households, or shelters. They are 4th graders from urban New York. My students are lovable and so eager to learn. Some of them are wise beyond their years due to some of the things they have seen or have been through. For some, school is their real home where this may be the only sense of a family life they have ever experienced.
