Our school is one of many suburban school districts in Michigan that were negatively impacted by the decline of the automotive industry. Many of students' parents lost their jobs and their homes. Many more of our 600 seventh and eighth grade students receive free and reduced lunches today compared to 60% just five years ago. Each fall I welcome another group of seventh graders into my English Language Arts classes who are reading below grade level. Most of my students admit they hate to read, because they cannot read well. Because they lack access to books at home, cannot read well and have not yet experienced the joy of having read a great book, they have no desire to read for pleasure. As a reading teacher, I know that reading takes practice. The more students read, the better readers and writers they become. My biggest challenge is convincing students that reading can be fun!
