Many of my students in grades 3 - 5 don't read for pleasure because reading is hard for them and the books don't interest them. Our inner city school has a high percentage of kids living in poverty; many are recent immigrants. Books are not readily available at their homes and access to their public libraries is difficult. It is really hard for them to find books they want to read AND can read. We don't have a good selection in our small classroom library.
