One important lesson I can give my departing seniors is the ability to recognize the importance of reaching out to the world around them to make it a better place. I want them to leave me as good humans. As my seniors are just beginning their lives as young adults upon high school graduation, kindergartners are just beginning their journeys of figuring out life as little people. Interestingly, seniors and kindergartners have far more in common than you might think! A couple days before graduation, seniors will don their graduation caps and gowns for the first time to revisit their elementary schools for the final time. As these students walk down the elementary hallways, elementary students line the halls to celebrate the upcoming graduation with cheers and high-fives. In the eyes of the little ones, the seniors are larger than life role models. The children’s book Oh, the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss provides powerful messages of awe and amazement, disappointment and perseverance that resonate with both seniors and kindergartners. To promote literacy, create a sense of community, and provide an opportunity for my seniors to give back to the school that has given them so much, I would like each senior to have a copy of the children’s book Oh, the Places You’ll Go to read to and to give to a kindergarten student before my seniors walk out of the elementary school for the final time. My Donors Choose project would require 130 copies of the children's book Oh, the Places You'll Go.
