Our District’s ELL (English Language Learner) population is growing each year and I have students with a wide range of reading levels. I have three English Language Learners in my 4th grade classroom who need reading resources at different levels. I have a 9 year-old who has just arrived from Korea three weeks ago. She is a wonderful kind student who is starting out at the beginning with no English at all. She has started to speak a few words. She knows the alphabet and we are starting on phonics. She loves to look at books and reading with someone. One of my favorite parts of the day is when I am able to sit and read one on one with her. My other two English Language Learners are from Macedonia. They have been here for a little over a year. They are able to have a conversation with you, but reading is a challenge for them. They are eager to learn and love to read. My last English Language Learner is a nine year old boy who Vietnamese. He is a hard worker and eager to learn.
