For a long time, my school has had a curriculum based on teaching short stories and other texts. As a result, many of my students started sixth grade never having completed an entire book and/or never reading once they left school for the day. This year, however, we have finally made the shift to reading books, and my students have grown tremendously as readers! My students make connections to the characters and events in the stories. They ask and answer questions. Some students have even asked if it's okay if they read ahead. The answer is always a resounding "Yes!" Struggling readers can be found reading with a teacher or working in a small group on any given day. Reading novels has made a huge difference in my classroom and in the way my students perceive books. So, while many students were hesitant at first, they have loved our first novel, "The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963", and are hungry to read more!
