My students are alternative education students. I teach art to mixed classes of 9th through 12th grade students. My students find it easiest to succeed in a smaller-sized class. Twenty-five percent of my students are special education students. Seventy-five percent or more of our students receive free school lunches. Many of our students "learn by doing", which is why it has been so exciting for me to provide them with the opportunity to use ceramics as an art medium. Most of the students have had no prior experience in clay. These students find the transformation of making something in wet clay through the glazing process exhilarating. Ceramics has been an important part of my existing art curriculum, and though we have a working kiln, and glazes from two years ago, our budget has been cut so that we have no money for the clay. My students take art for an elective as well as a requirement, and many of them have been planning to take it this May. They are so expressive!
