I have the privilege of teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students at an inner city charter school in New York. As the Reading Intervention Literacy Specialist, I come in contact with students that are well below grade level in reading and writing. In fact, a majority of my students are reading two years or more below grade level. My students struggle with a multitude of reading and writing skills, but most often their inadequate vocabulary development leads to adverse effects in their ability to grow in these areas. My students maintain a curiosity for learning, despite their often negative experiences with reading and writing. However, without the support of engaging and interactive activities to motivate them to work on the basic vocabulary development skills they need, I risk losing that spark which will keep their curiosity burning.
