I'm a fourth-grade teacher in an inner-city school in Worcester, Massachusetts with over 700 students in grades Pre-K to 6. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in the city, where students speak a multitude of languages and 44% of all students are English Language Learners. As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics. Despite the many hardships my students may face, they are always eager and ready to put in their best effort. My students know that we are striving to learn and better ourselves and sometimes we fail or make mistakes. These failures and mistakes are important steps in learning. My students deserve an engaging classroom with the correct tools to help them become life-long learners.
