My students come from a high poverty district in Texas where many parents can't afford to even purchase crayons and paper let alone tempura paint, brushes, easels, stamps, stencils, etc. In my bilingual Pre-K class, students often enter lacking vocabulary or conversational skills, so art is a great way to tap into the students' heads. They love painting and drawing their families and pets at the beginning of the year and by the end they are asking me how to draw a dragonfly... By definition Pre-K is the first experience these kids will have with a school setting, and I am determined to foster them into lifelong learners who love school!
