I teach first grade at a school that is 99% African-American; my students come from very low income families and many of them are falling below grade average in reading. Many of my parents understand the importance of reading and want to help their children succeed, but they simply do not have the resources to provide a literacy-rich environment at home. Some of my students don't have a single book to call their own.
