My students live in a very poor, rural area in North Carolina. Their parents work in agriculture based jobs, and most have not completed any type of higher education. Many of my students are on free and reduced lunch, and most have to overcome language barriers on a daily basis. The largest struggle I have noticed is that many students do not have a culture to fit into because at home they practice their Hispanic culture, while at school they are expected to participate and embrace American culture. Even though they have all of these obstacles to overcome, they still try their hardest to achieve their goals for the future, but the materials requested would help them think outside their small community.
