I am a 4th grade teacher in an inner city school with a very high rate of poverty. Not only do my students suffer from low economic status, they suffer from parents who are incarcerated, abuse, drugs being used and sold by their parents or other family members, and death on a constant basis. All of this makes it very difficult for them to actually concentrate on their education. The conditions of the school do not help either. The school building is very old and is beginning to fall apart. My students get very excited when they get anything new because they are used to hand me downs and things being old and falling apart around them.
