I teach a room of energetic and good-natured 4th graders in rural Maryland. Cows graze outside of our classroom window, but just to the left of the cows stands the high-school football field. For many of my students (both boys and girls), sports are an integral part of their daily lives. These students will go above and beyond when they are engaged. Inspired by a recent talk I viewed online, I walked into my room one day and wrote "Wo is Winnipeg?". When I got blank stares, I simply said "Figure it out. Use the resources in the room." The blank looks didn't last long. And within 15 minutes, the students had figured out that the language was German, translated the question from German to English ("Where is Winnipeg?"), and announced with aplomb the answer: "CANADA!". My students are inspiring, persistent, and dynamic. They inspire me to find bigger and better ways to challenge them and help them to grow.
