My students are 27 curious, motivated, intelligent 4th graders who attend school in northern California. They want to learn. Our school is in a middle to upper middle income area. While this location has its advantages, our school doesn't qualify for the funding programs that many schools in low income areas use to provide technology. We have few additional resources beyond our basic funding from the state. Our district is a revenue limit district and so is funded at a lower level than surrounding areas. Our parents are strong supporters of their children's education, and they willingly provide extra funds for day-to-day expenses; however, technology is expensive and often beyond their ability to purchase. Our school population is growing due to new families moving into the area and transfers from other schools as part of the state's Program Improvement mandate. Our school population is becoming more socioeconomically diverse without a commensurate increase in state funding.
