Our school consists of 470 very diverse and enthusiastic students who are ready to learn about art and its importance to a dynamic education that prepares them for the future. Our students are 54% Latino, 28% African American, 14% White & Asian, 2% decline to state. Our families come from the working-class communities in Richmond, CA. Our school is in an impoverished area and is one of the lowest performing school districts in the state. Studies show that students that come from low socio-economic backgrounds and are predominately English Language Learners (ELL), benefit more from arts integration than their peers. Research also finds that communication skills of elementary ELL's greatly benefit from art-integrated instruction. Many students participate in the Spanish/English Dual Language Immersion Program; we are the only school in the district providing this program that provides students with the ability to become bilingual and biliterate.
