Hands-on labs and real world exposure to science are key components of an effective science curriculum. I want my students to be able to have real lab skills to be college-ready to major in the sciences or to be able to understand what types of skills scientists employ to advance our society in the 21st century. I also hope to expose them to experiences in science outside of the classroom through real and virtual field trips. John Steinbeck, a famous alumnus from our school, often wrote about the intertwining relationships of many groups of people coming together in a single community. The population of our high school is similarly diverse. We have students of many races and a range of socioeconomic backgrounds and personal experience. Some students are susceptible to the violent gangs of our city, while others are highly involved in the school and community and turn their goals toward college and future careers.
