I teach 6th grade students in a low income neighborhood. Most of our students are on free or reduced lunch. They come everyday with the expectation that I am going to teach them something new each day. As an educator, it is my responsibility to motivate students to learn while meeting them at their need. As a Reading/Language Arts teacher, I am charged with helping students to improve reading and comprehension skills. Their reluctance to read material that is of no interest to them is evident each time a book is placed in front of them. While they put forth an effort, there is clearly no interest in some of the material that they are required to read. Although they are charged with reading various genres, I believe its important to spark their desire to read first. That's where these high interest books will make a difference in the classroom.
