I teach 85 high school students in a high-poverty school in Saint Louis. My students are two or more grade levels behind in reading. Many of my students have not read a book since they were a small child. They do not have access to books or can't find any that they can connect to. My students are insecure with their reading abilities and will often shut down or become easily frustrated with reading tasks. My students are enthusiastic and lively learners, but they don't have learning resources or support at home with reading. My goal is to help them learn to love reading. It is so wonderful when I see my students who "hate" reading become engrossed in engaging literature. The current problem is that I don't have enough of their favorite titles to go around.
