My students are 2nd graders in an urban school district in Indiana. We have a rather high poverty rate. We are a public school that goes from kindergarten to grade 6. My kids are like any other kids but face more challenges than most. I have one student who lives in a homeless shelter, one who is a ward of the state, a few new comers to the country, two who have moderate learning difficulties, and all come from a neighborhood that was at one time the pride of its' residents. Now the students face many potentially dangerous situations on a daily basis in this once beloved neighborhood. These are all hard working, loving, wonderful children, who have set goals for themselves at a young age. They will become successful through our determination and their tenacity.
