My students are a lively group of young teens who attend a regional 7th and 8th grade Jr High School situated a few miles outside of an urban setting. Students from both towns, about 320 in all, funnel into this one school prior to entering high school. All students from this state who attend a public high school are required by law to pass standardized achievement tests by 10th grade, so closing any gaps in their understanding of math is essential. My classes provide an additional 1/2 year of math that is technology and standards based. Like most teens, they enjoy being with their friends and talking, so providing opportunities for them to collaborate on problem-solving and to provide feedback to one another benefits all. Allowing students to be involved in their learning helps to keep them motivated and engaged. The web-based site used for this class allows students to work outside of school as well using the Internet.
