"I can't draw." "I'm bad at art." These two phrases are forbidden in my classroom. They represent common mindsets that hold students back from unleashing the creative potential inside all of them. I understand why students think this way: most haven't had consistent art instruction in school or in programs outside of it, and there is a commonly held belief that artistic skill is based on inherent talent. This belief and lack of practicing art leads many students to feel that if their work isn't brilliant right away, they're "bad" or they "can't". My job is to teach students that art is something you can learn, something that, if committed to, teaches the types of habits and mindsets that lead to success later on in life. I seek to ground them in the fact that their voice matters, and then guide them along the process of defining it and persevering through all of the challenges that entails.
