My students were impacted in a variety of ways. Some lost their homes, their friends, and family members. Others lost nothing material except the innocence of their youth. They have seen the town they call “home” ravaged. School is a place, with the proper surroundings, which could be the first sense of normalcy for my students. At school they can get away from the havoc and enjoy their friends – like fifth graders should.
