I teach in a low-income school. Most of our students receive free or reduced lunch, and are unable to afford even the most basic school supplies. We have a high population of ESOL, self-contained Special Education, and LD Resource students. I teach English language learners in kindergarten through fifth grade. My students want to be independent in all they do, but they are so limited by their language skills. Reading is one of the hardest things for them. They see their English-speaking peers succeeding at reading and want to be the same. Most of my parents are not able to help their students succeed at home because of their limited English vocabulary and skills. This directly affects their classroom performance in many ways, including practicing important skills through homework.
