The students in my first and second grade bilingual class are working every day to improve their reading skills in two languages simultaneously. They attend a school where they are the only class of bilingual students and they often find it hard to feel like they fit in. Because they are learning literacy skills in two languages, progress is slower than in the monolingual classes, and it proves difficult for my students to enjoy the same learning center activities that the other students experience because they can't read directions on their own yet.
