My students are 4th grade Sheltered English Immersion students from Cape Verde, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and El Salvador. Our school is K-8 and serves a 100% free lunch population. My students are all extremely bright and eager to learn, but they come from non-English speaking homes that most often have very few books in any language. In addition, my students' native languages have not been richly developed, and therefore, they have very few literacy and oral communication skills that they can actually transfer to their learning of English, reading, and writing. Creating a vibrant and exciting reading culture in the classroom is absolutely essential to unlock the potential these kids have to become engaged, confident, and enthusiastic young people both in and out of the classroom.
