HHS is in an impoverished area of New Haven, CT, several miles, but a world apart from Yale and other more affluent areas of the city. Our kids are good kids for the most part. They are deficient in their reading skills due to many factors, including a lack of intrinsic motivation, lack of parental support due mostly to a transient population, parents who work multiple jobs to make ends meet, and in general, a culture that does not read. I believe students want to learn and can learn. I've seen that books like The Kite Runner have the power to reach across cultures and motivate students, even ones who are not willing readers. I know that Shakespeare scares kids like ours because they feel like they're not smart enough to read him, but bringing the Bard to students like mine is incredibly rewarding! When you fund my projects, you're helping some great kids have an amazing literary experience!
