Ms. Smithers piloted and created the Spanish Program at Preston Veterans Memorial School in 2010. Students acquire the language little bit at a time starting in Kindergarten. In general, grades K-2 are focused on listening and understanding through singing, and grades 3-5 are focused on listening to stories, reading and retelling. Ms. Smithers learned to speak Spanish in Guatemala, where she lived for 15 years. She loves to share her passion for the Spanish language and culture with students. Prior to Preston, she taught high school in Florida and Connecticut.
