My fifth graders are vibrant, creative, and brilliant. They come from a very high poverty community, and our school is about 98% low-socioeconomic. However, these students persevere and overcome these challenges every day. Statistically, our students have scored lower in math on standardized testing than what is expected by the state of Texas. Our school does the best that it can to provide the students with every opportunity to be successful in math. With a home life that offers very little support when it comes to academics, I have to work twice as hard to teach my students not only math concepts, but also to believe in themselves.
