Like most early learners, my students are excited about learning. They still have that wide-eyed wonder that keeps the window of opportunity to teach them open. My students do not get the opportunity to visit the public library as frequently as they should. Many come to school without the benefit of early literacy exposure. I am delighted when I see them beginning to value books and reading. Because I see the pleasure it brings to them, I am delighted to bring them to the carpet for the many read alouds that give me the opportunity to model good reading attitudes and behaviors. Their opportunities to read throughout the school day are crucial. In this New York City school that serves both impoverished and working class children this support is so vital. As second graders, they must be given the opportunity to practice skills to make them permanent. They do that by reading to kindergarten children sometimes. They are proud of their opportunities to be the "teachers."
