New York Daily News: Alexis Ohanian, Reddit co-founder, wants you to give to cash-strapped Brooklyn science teachers

National studies show that teachers spend about $1,000 of their own money on materials and school supplies. One Brooklyn tech entrepreneur is trying to change that — one classroom at a time.Internet geek Alexis Ohanian, the Prospect Heights-based cofounder of Reddit, wants to raise $50,000 by the end of the month to contribute to Brooklyn’s science, technology, engineering and math teachers.The so-called “STEM” subjects are seen as the future of the American economy — but teachers like Steven Oszust are still living in the past.Oszust, a biology teacher at International High School, wants $1,000 to buy kits so he can show his 11th graders how to conduct genetic testing.His high poverty school is made up mostly of recent arrivals who learn best through hands-on lessons because of language barriers.“If we want our students to raise the bar and keep up with other students around the world, we need to invest in them,” said Oszust, a 17-year classroom vet. “But money is just not available.”Read the full story on New York Daily.
