To meet the diversity in my classroom I want to create reading and writing lessons that include more choice for the students to select works that meet their needs while embracing the important social justice issues of our times: race, gender, ethnicity, and religion. Last semester I realized that one book, one writing assignment did not meet the needs of the many types of students in my classes. After attending the NCTE convention in Atlanta, I was inspired by the social justice workshops to create a book list and writing assignment list that focused on choice. In order to accomplish this goal, I needed to add contemporary works not available in our school's tradebook inventory--mostly classic works that do not engage readers. We spend so many hours reading books that were relevant 30 or 50 years ago (maybe) and almost no time engaging with contemporary works that deal with the issues these students are facing. I wanted my students to see people that look and sounded like them, worried about the same problems they encounter, and to pair important classic works with contemporary fiction and non-fiction as well as children's books. Through the study of these works I want my students to create authentic writing--letters to the editor, protest campaigns, service projects, panel discussions--on the issues that matter to them. This book list includes March, a National Book Award-winning graphic memoir by John Lewis, civil rights leader and congressman from our state; new non-fiction and fiction from women writers and persons of color; and works like Battle Hymn of a Tiger Mother and I am Malala that my students specifically requested to read. Additionally, I have included works for them to choose that meet the varied reading levels in my classes--from 4th grade to post-secondary levels.
