I work as a Resource Specialist Teacher at Hollenbeck Middle School in Boyle Heights, near downtown Los Angeles. My students receive special education supports for autism and specific learning disabilities. They are able to be successful in the general education classroom environments because of the accommodations and instructional differentiation that the resource program provides. Some are enrolled in the Learning Center for one of their class periods, in order to provide specific reading or mathematics instruction or reteaching or for additional time for completing assignments or tests from their other classes. The Learning Center is a smaller setting that allows for more differentiation and individualized support. As specific instructional needs arise, students are able to receive sheltered instruction while maintaining engagement and access to the general education curriculum with their grade-level peers.
