I teach special education and reading in a 7-12th grade public school in Chicago. 97% of our students participate in the federally-funded free or reduced lunch program, which is an indicator that many of them live below the poverty line. Though our students are flourishing and our school is well-established, the reality is that teachers do not have the funds available to equip our classrooms with important materials we want our students to work with. I teach 7th and 8th grade students: some have special needs, others are struggling readers, and many are English language learners. Most are all of the above. I am committed to meeting my students where they are and challenging them relentlessly. I have had a lot of success with "closing the gap," which means that students come to me reading 2 or 3 levels below grade level and they leave my classroom able to read and comprehend grade-level text.
