The majority of my students are struggling readers who have never passed a state reading or writing exam. By 8th Grade many of them have decided that they can never get better at reading. They see their reading difficulties as a personality flaw that is to be hidden at all costs. My pep talks only go so far- we need great books!! So these kids can imagine different worlds and see themselves in the fantastically complex characters of awesome high interest fiction!
