I teach advanced social studies in middle school and I am the gifted teacher. My students should be doing more than memorizing facts and dates. Most jobs involve some use of technology whether it is computer science or secretarial work. In my students' future careers and college, they will need to be able to gather information from a variety of sources, using a variety of programs, and be able to present that knowledge to peers, coworkers, and employers. In my class, they will use a variety of programs to gain skills such as word processing software, presentation software and spreadsheets and databases. We also complete a year-long research project called National History Day which involves doing research, creating an annotated bibliography, and then creating a product to demonstrate knowledge in one of five formats.
