I teach an American/US History humanities block with my colleague at our small public school on the south side of Chicago. The population in which we teach has little to no working knowledge of geography, map reading skills, and the difference between continents, countries, and states. If my goal is to prepare these students for college, I have to ensure that their basic geography skills are on par, or they will never be able to connect the relationship that characters have to their setting.
