I am an 8th grade math teacher in rural Hawaii. The educational disparity here is tangibly evident; it would require no more than a visit to schools on each coast of the island to see it. The differences in money, resources, and other socioeconomic repercussions create an awfully unlevel playing ground for educational opportunity. The school my students attend is both underfunded and under resourced in comparison to the schools across the island. Regardless of the obstacles, our children are wonderful. They are brilliant, curious, and eager to learn. With a fostering learning environment, they have all the potential in the world to succeed. Many of the students live on the coastal front and enjoy surfing, body boarding, and swimming in their free time. Our popular school sports include football and basketball. Many students take pride in our fine arts program and are frequently involved in creating films, writing poetry, and reading literature. They truly are wonderful.
