Each day I arrive at a different school with a hand truck loaded with science materials. I am a science specialist, and I strive to make science real for approximately 650 fourth and fifth grade students at five schools each week. (Picture: view from inside a hot air balloon that I built to teach convection) For the past six years, I have been working to close the achievement gap in elementary science. Although I have yet to accomplished my goal, I have worked to boost achievement, and in the process I have earned some very prestigious honors: 2007 California Teacher of the Year and 2008 Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching. My students are joyful, curious, and quite frankly, the reason for my accolades. They inspire me to do all I can to make learning rigorous, hands-on, and fun. I am seeking four microscopes to create an activity station for a traveling science discovery museum that I have been developing and presenting for the past fifteen years.

"Dear Rita,
Thank you for your donation. Perhaps this project was a bit too ambitious. Our Science Centers are aging and it is time to replace the LCD projectors. It would be fantastic to be able to have the students take notes without having to turn off the lights."

"I gave to this project because I don't want to see this project expire. I hope others will share my viewpoint."

"Dear Ann,
I am a huge fan of science education, because science cannot be taught in isolation. It's kind of like a magnet, in that every north pole has a south pole. In the same way that you can't simply have one magnetic pole, science instruction always pairs with another academic subject like math, reading, or art. When folks teach science, they make every minute count twice.
All the best,
Mr. R"

"Dear "A Donor",
I don't know you, but thank you for supporting my students. In a world that is moving toward the virtual, it is more important than ever to get children to do science, to observe their world, and to measure it. These tools will help make my classes more engaging, more active, and more meaningful. Thank you for supporting hands-on science.
Best,
Mr. R"
