We are authors and illustrators in our first grade classroom. We write text every day in our writing workshop. Part of our writing experience is publishing our work after it is written. The students acquire not only writing, but reading growth in our writing workshop time. The ability to see their work published gives them great pride in their accomplishments. As with much of our learning in first grade it is based on becoming independent in work habits and goals, and not judging their ability with those around them. Our school is a rural, self contained PreK-6th grade school, with a high level of free and reduced lunch. Many students come from single parent homes. Parents are strong supporters of our school, and their child's literacy development. Although our school is small we raise strong independent students and our first grade and writing workshop is the first stepping stone in this development.
