I teach 5th Grade Social Studies and need something to help grab my students’ attention with US History. My favorite way to yank them is to tell them stories they won't find in their text books. The suggested books are great books to either tell a unique story or see the event from a different perspective. Our school is a Title I school where 85% of our students are on free and reduced lunches. I can only put so much money of my own into the classroom and would not ask the parents because I know that they are hardworking people that need the money themselves.

All these books make students want to read. And as research shows over and over again, the more students read, the better off they will be."

"I was a history and politics major and this period in American history is my absolute favorite. Using critical thinking skills and different perspectives to truly understand this period in time explains so much about why our country is where it is today. I admire this project and hope the kids truly enjoy this experience!"
