As a counselor for the school, I get to work with all of the students in some capacity, but I am also privileged to teach the gifted and talented (GT) program. These students, despite not having access to resources that many other elementary campuses have, are able to maintain a thirst for knowledge seen in the highest achieving schools across the country. What led me to begin this quest for iPads was a lesson plan I had for our GT class in which they were to design a STEM-based game or application. Unfortunately, our school has no computer lab or access to much technology, but a few teachers were able to lend their personal devices for students to use. There weren't enough for every student, so one third grader decided to just draw a picture of a tablet on notebook paper and design his app that way (it's no wonder he's labeled "gifted"). Despite the evident struggles our students and families face, our school was 1st out of 80+ schools in our district in science testing last year.
