I teach a boisterous group of 10 and 11 year-old students in a predominantly low-income neighborhood. Ninety-two percent of my students are low-socioeconomic and come from single-parent homes. Daily my students enter my classroom eager to learn and to please and I am happy to oblige. They are my children whom I will fight tooth and nail to teach. I have high expectations for each and everyone of them and demand that they give me their best. I am their counselor, their coach, their nurse, their champion; because they need me. My students are often the oldest of their siblings and carry with them the burden of being a stand-in parent. My fifth-graders struggle both academically and socially. Every day is a lesson in self-control and self-management of discipline for my students due to their daily struggles with the pressures of absentee parents, homelessness and hunger.
