This is not Peter Pan's tale of the lost boys. These lost boys lived far from a fairy tale land. They lived in Sudan in the 1990s. I teach 8th grade language arts in a high-need, diverse community. We have 25 languages spoken in our school. It's essential that our reading material be culturally relevant. Through literature students are able to "see" themselves, critically analyze and discuss character education traits. By integrating great amounts of nonfiction into my reading curriculum, I am able to reach these students at the level where they currently are, academically and emotionally. Our school explicitly teaches character education. By teaching "They Poured Fire on Us from the Sky" I will be able to link it to a previous study of Ethiopia and examine character education traits from caring and kindness to work ethic and perseverance in an age-appropriate, interesting format.
