Unfortunately, writing frequently falls by the wayside in the Bilingual Teacher's quest for literacy in two languages. Supporting students to maintain a good pace in their reading development sometimes comes at the expense of the fundamentals of their writing development. Of course, the short term benefits of faster reading can come back to haunt my 2nd graders when they are faced with multi-page research essays before they even hit university. My job is to make sure that reading and writing development complement each other as each domain grows.
