Our students are sixth - eighth graders who live in an urban, impoverished area. They are not proficient readers, so they need the support of a reading buddy when reading grade level novels. They are, however, very enthusiastic and willing to try to achieve reading these 20 novels in a year. Our school made tremendous strides in reading last year, because we encouraged students to stretch themselves and read as much as possible. Because our students often need a concrete goal, reading to participate in the reading bowl or in state voting gives them that goal.
